Since their formation over 10,000 years ago, native populations have used the Great Lakes and St. Lawerence River as a transport system as well as a source of food and water. In modern times, these uses have expanded exponentially. For better or worse, man's manipulation and development will continue to make the St. Lawerence Seaway a vital part of life on the continent. In more ways than one, traveling up the St. Lawerence Seaway is going into the heart of North America.
